House Panel to Hillary: Turn Over Your Server Now — Or Else
A House panel charged with investigating the death of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, has formally asked Hillary Clinton to hand over the private computer server she kept in her home while Secretary of State.
Clinton used a private address and personal email server from 2009-2013, which had the end effect of shielding her emails — both personal and professional — from watchdogs and journalists. While she says she did nothing wrong and claims she has since turned over all relevant emails, some lawmakers want to know why she deleted some 31,000 emails.
And many Republicans want a neutral third-party from outside politics to examine her email server and determine whether she has withheld — or attempted to destroy — relevant emails.
The House committee is probing the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on a U.S. facility in Benghazi, Libya that left the American ambassador dead, along with three others. Republicans have long contended Clinton fell short of her duties that day, and have been requesting emails for years.
Rep. Trey Gowdy, head of the Benghazi Select Committee, said in a letter that Hillary must turn over the server by April 3 — or he will be forced to turn to Speaker John Boehner. The letter also says the committee would not be looking at the emails, but would instead find a neutral party to examine them.
