NRA chief: Dictator Obama hates 2nd Amendment
In a Fox News interview with Lou Dobbs, NRA President Wayne LaPierre blasted President Obama as “acting like a dictator” in his push to ban the ammunition for America’s most popular sporting rifle, the AR-15.
While the issue has been burning up conservative websites and blogs, it’s received almost no coverage from establishment media giants.
“Why are we not hearing more of an outcry on this?” Dobbs asked.
“Probably because the media doesn’t want the American public to know what this president is trying to impose on them. This is a president who, he’s grasping for straws,” LaPierre said. “He hates the Second Amendment, he hates the fact that Americans have a constitutional right to own firearms.”
LaPierre pointed out that Obama’s plans to ban the AR-15 itself failed in Congress. That was back in 2013, when the weapon Democrats tried to characterize as a “military-style assault rifle” proved more popular than they imagined among sporting enthusiasts and hunters. The AR-15 is branded by Colt and modeled as a civilian sporting rifle on a semi-automatic platform, whereas the military version, the M16, is fully automatic.
Most sportsman use the AR-15 for competitive or recreational target shooting. It has no history of being used as a weapon of choice by street criminals, law enforcement officers told WND.
Yet, Obama and a small core of Democrats, including Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., have targeted the gun relentlessly with the help of advocacy groups funded by Michal Bloomberg, Bill Gates and other corporate elites.
“He can’t win at the ballot box, he can’t win at the Congress, and now he’s trying to act like a dictator and planning on forcing this ammo ban on the American public by executive regulation,” LaPierre said.
“Why the sudden interest in this so-called 5.56mm, green-tip ammunition that effectively, then, wouldn’t be available to gun owners, rendering the gun not much use?” asked Dobbs.
“Well he tried to ban ARs and he couldn’t ban ARs from the American public, a popular sporting rifle, so now he’s trying to ban AR ammunition. I actually brought a graphic to explain this,” LaPierre said.
His graphic showed the different sizes of rifle cartridges, starting with the .223-caliber, also called the 5.56mm, and moving up to larger ballistics popular among deer hunters.
“The one he’s trying to ban is the 5.56; it’s a small rifle cartridge. The thing is if he can ban that, because it pierces soft-body armor, he can also ban the 30.06, which is next to it, a really popular hunting cartridge. He can ban the other two hunting cartridges, the .300 win mag, the .375. He can ban every cartridge in between that,” LaPierre said. “In fact, under this standard he can ban all rifle cartridges, because all of them pierce soft body armor.”
WND reported earlier this week that the president is proposing to ban the ammo to protect police officers, a premise that was openly debunked by law officers and groups representing law officers.
Obama’s spokesman, Josh Earnest, insisted it was simply “common sense” to most people that ammo for an “easily concealable” firearm able to penetrate an officer’s soft body armor needed to be banned.
WND’s report revealed that not a single police officer, anywhere in the U.S., has ever been shot with an AR-15 handgun that pierced his protective vest.
Gun Owners of America Chief Counsel Michael Hammond told WND a citizen revolt is already under way.
“The Second Amendment community is really all fired up on this,” he told WND.
But the average American who is not involved in the Second Amendment community likely has never heard of the proposal.
Chris Cox, executive director of NRA’s Legislative Institute, said that’s a shame, because the method in which the president is going after rifle ammo could be used to go after anything.
“If they can ban green-tip ammo based on their definition, they can ban all ammo. What’s so frightening about this is, this is a blatant overreach,” he said at last week’s CPAC convention.
“We talk about what this president can do with a Republican Congress. Apparently he thinks he can do whatever he wants. He can completely do an end-run around Congress, he can rewrite the statute that allows for a minor exemption … this ammo was exempted 20 years ago. In 20 years no .223 round has ever been used in a crime, fired from a handgun … or penetrated the vest of an officer,” Cox said.
“It ought to offend anybody, whether you like guns or not, whether you love guns, hate guns, you should be offended if you have a president who is willing to say: ‘I don’t like it, so I’m going to ban it. I don’t care what Congress says, I don’t care what the courts say, I don’t care if it’s popular, I don’t care if it’s illegal for me to do it, I’m going to do it anyway.’ That’s what’s frightening,” he said.
“And regardless of where you are on the Second Amendment, everybody ought to pay attention to this issue.”
