Ted Cruz: Term Limits ‘One of the Most Effective Ways’ to ‘Drain the Swamp’ and End Cronyism in D.C.

One of the policies now President-elect Donald Trump campaigned on is term limits for Congress, a popular position among the American people and a very unpopular one among the politically elite ruling class in the nation’s capitol.

Former presidential candidate and Texas Senator Ted Cruz appeared on FOX News’ Hannity Thursday night to explain why imposing term limits is a most effective way to “drain the swamp” that is Washington, D.C, where politicians often come to Washington with good intentions but become corrupted from being “career politicians.”

“It’s far too easy for people to come to Washington and become career politicians and get corrupted by the system, where the special interests, the lobbyists, begin supporting them,” Cruz told Sean Hannity. “They stay there forever.”

Cruz said that having career politicians was never the intention of America’s Founding Fathers.

“When the framers designed the Constitution, they envisioned citizen legislators who would leave their jobs for a period of time, leave their businesses, their farms, come to Washington, serve the nation and then go back,” Cruz explained. “We don’t have that arrangement today,” he stated.

Cruz said that his constitutional amendment to impose term limits, three terms for congressmen (six years) and two terms for senators (12 years) would hopefully be brought up for a vote soon during this session of Congress.

“President-elect Trump campaigned on that and it’s one of the most effective ways to end the corruption in Washington and to drain the swamp.”

In an earlier statement supporting his term limits amendment, Cruz said that Washington, D.C. has been transformed into a “graveyard of good intentions.”

“D.C. is broken. The American people resoundingly agreed on election day, and President-elect Donald Trump has committed to putting government back to work for the American people. It is well past time to put an end to the cronyism and deceit that has transformed Washington into a graveyard of good intentions.”

Hannity, a loyal supporter of Donald Trump during the election, praised Ted Cruz for fighting to repeal Obamacare and taking the heat for it when no one else would.

Cruz went on to say that he was “very, very encouraged” by the way Trump’s cabinet is shaping up, describing it as an “all-star team” of “strong conservatives,” and told Hannity that he’d just met with General James “Mad Dog” Mattis for an hour and described the next Secretary of Defense as a  “serious, clear-eyed leader willing to stand up to radical Islamic terrorism — not bound by the political correctness and willful blindness of the last eight years.”

Passing term limits is a time that has come and with Republicans holding the House, the Senate and the presidency, there is no excuse to not push it forward. You can bet that this will be fought tooth in nail by swamp-dwellers who should have been booted out by complacent voters along time ago.
