The Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist group’s affiliate in Egypt claimed responsibility for a rocket attack from the Sinai Peninsula into southern Israel on Friday, AFP reports.

“Three Grad rockets were fired at Jewish positions in occupied Palestine,” the group, now known as Sinai Province and previously called Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis, said in a statement on Twitter.

Residents of the Gaza Belt were forced into rocket shelters after sirens sounded at approximately 4:20 p.m. local time on Friday afternoon.

The rockets exploded in open fields. No damage or injuries were reported.

The Sinai Province’s claim of responsibility came despite earlier denials by Egyptian military and security officials, who spoke to The Associated Press (AP), that rockets were fired from the Sinai towards Israel.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Sinai Province, a group affiliated with ISIS formerly known as Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis, has claimed responsibility for most of the terrorist attacks in the Sinai over the last few years.
