LA City Council Votes to Make ‘Columbus Day’ ‘Indigenous People’s Day’

America-hating leftists vandalize a statue of Christopher Columbus.

Los Angeles will no longer be celebrating Columbus Day because it supposedly celebrates genocide. Instead, the City Council voted on Wednesday to replace it with “Indigenous People’s Day.”

From KTLA 5:

Over the objections of Italian American civic groups, the council made the second Monday in October a day in L.A. to commemorate ‘indigenous, aboriginal and native people.’ The day will remain a paid holiday for city employees.

Appearing before city lawmakers, Italian Americans voiced anguish over the proposal, saying it would erase part of their heritage. Some said they supported Indigenous Peoples Day but wanted it to be held at a different time.

“On behalf of the Italian community, we want to celebrate with you,” said Ann Potenza, president of Federated Italo-Americans of Southern California, to a room of Native American activists. “We just don’t want it to be at the expense of Columbus Day.”

In 2009, then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger eliminated the Columbus Day state holiday as part of his budget cuts. Seattle, Minneapolis, Berkeley and Santa Cruz all celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.

Columbus Day remains a federal holiday. Currently, the New York city council is debating whether or not to remove the Columbus statue from Columbus Circle. Perhaps they will then rename it Indigenous People’s Circle.
