Trump Counting on Less Educated Whites
Donald Trump is putting all his hope in getting white voters without college degrees to the polls, The New York Times reports.
More than 50 million members of the voting-age population are less educated whites, the largest group, followed by whites with some college and whites with degrees. The populations of voting-age African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans combined amount to the same as the bloc of less educated whites.
Previous GOP nominee Mitt Romney won white voters without college degrees by 26 percentage points over President Barack Obama. Former President Bill Clinton won the less educated white vote in both of his elections, and Trump holds a large advantage over Hillary Clinton in this area. In a Morning Consult poll released Sunday, Trump held a 19-point lead over Clinton among this group. His one concern now is getting them to the polls.
In 2012, 29 million white Americans of voting-age with no college degree did not get to the polls, leaving the election to be decided by just 5 million votes. Less educated whites showed up less than whites with some college or with degrees, and a higher percentage of minority voters made it to the polls than they did.
Trump is relying on the same enthusiasm unlikely voters in Great Britain had during the referendum to leave the European Union. Their turnout hadn’t been predicted by the polls, a fact that Trump relies on to counter poor polling numbers.
