Anti-Israel Russia ‘Regrets’ That Arab Terrorists’ UN Bid Failed

Russia expressed regret at the failure of the [so-called] “Palestinian Authority” (PA) resolution at the UN Security Council on Tuesday, describing it as a “strategic error.”
“Russia regrets that the UN Security Council did not manage to adopt the draft resolution,” Russia’s envoy to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said after the vote late on Tuesday.
“We consider this a strategic error,” he told the council in footage broadcast by the Rossiya 24 state news channel.
The resolution unilaterally called for recognition of a “Palestinian state” as well as an Israeli withdrawal from Judea, Samaria and eastern Jerusalem by the end of 2017.
The Russian ambassador accused Washington of “monopolizing” peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs, as well as of bringing the negotiations “to a dead end,” even though the PA’s unity deal with Hamas torpedoed the talks in April as well its move to join international conventions in breach of the Oslo Accords.
Russia was among eight countries that backed the controversial resolution setting a 12-month deadline for a final peace deal, one short of the nine required for it to pass. France and China were also among the eight countries backing the resolution.
Australia and the United States voted against, while the other five council members abstained.
US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power explained “we voted against this resolution not because we are comfortable with the status quo. We voted against it because … peace must come from hard compromises that occur at the negotiating table.”
“The United States every day searches for new ways to take constructive steps to support the parties in making progress toward achieving a negotiated settlement,” she added. “The Security Council resolution put before us today is not one of those constructive steps.”

A Russia Today reporter quit Friday, furious over the way the network covered the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 crash.
Sara Firth, who was born in the UK and has worked for the state-backed TV station since 2009, said Russia Today suggested the Ukrainian government took down the Boeing 777 flying over the country.
London-based reporter is not the first journalist to call the network’s bias into questions — another reporter quit in March over the way Russian management covered riots in neighboring Ukraine.
“I couldn’t do it anymore,” she told Buzzfeed. “Every single day we’re lying and finding sexier ways to do it.”
Firth, who first reported Russian government-backed station from Moscow before transferring to the London office, said management put witnesses into the story who specifically blamed Ukraine for the crash.
One correspondent said a previous plane crash that Ukraine had been involved with was “worth mentioning,” she claimed.
“I didn’t want to watch a story like that, where people have lost loved ones and we’re handling it like that,” she said.
The Thursday disaster killed all 298 people on board. U.S. satellites determined a missile took down the plane, but it’s unclear who fired it.
Firth claimed the news organization has prompted Russian propaganda for years. The network uses young, obedient reporters for big, controversial stories — the less-experienced journalists are more likely to stay on message, she said.
“The second you start to question or report honestly then you’re a problem.”
Still, she respects many of her coworkers. She said many of them tell the truth, and have tried to fight the system while keeping their jobs on the inside.
“It’s great team, so talented. But at the heart of that organization it’s rotten,” she told Buzzfeed.
Firth’s resignation from Russia Today mirrors her former coworker Liz Wahl’s.
Firth had worked for Russia Today since 2009.
Wahl, a Washington D.C.-based correspondent for the station, quit live on-air in March over the way the network covered Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military intervention in Ukraine’s Crimea region.
“RT is not about the truth,” Wahl said in a March CNN interview after her exit from the network. “It’s about promoting a Putinist agenda. It’s also about bashing America.”
Anna Belkina, head of communications at Russia Today, released a statement about Firth’s resignation.
“Sara has declared that she chooses the truth; apparently we have different definitions of truth,” the statement said.
It continued: “We believe that truth is what our reporters see on the ground, with their own eyes, and not what’s printed in the morning London newspaper. In our coverage, RT, unlike the rest of the media, did not draw conclusions before the official investigation has even begun. We show all sides of the story, even if everyone else has already decided which side is to blame.”

[theguardian] – Many historic anniversaries are being celebrated this year in a rather grim security environment. They invoke spooky allusions to the past and invite us to draw lessons from them. But not everyone, obviously.
Vladimir Putin has stated that there was nothing wrong with the Nazi-Soviet Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, which was made 75 years ago on 23 August 1939. The Soviet Union simply did not want to go to war, Putin added.
Two tiny details seem to be ignored in this evaluation: the secret protocols of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact merely enslaved eastern Europe (by the Soviet Union, incidentally). Second, the pact led to the second world war. It was not an escape route by the Soviet Union, but instead a cold-blooded calculation to ignore Hitler’s growing appetite for territories.
Leaving history to historians, I would like to draw attention to the western responsibility here. We cannot let such statements go unnoticed because they are part of a bigger narrative, under which the Russian leadership now seeks endorsement for its aggressive and revisionist foreign policy.
Otherwise we, the western democracies, risk becoming part of a similar pact. Not by consciously entering into dirty deals with the aggressor, but by not doing enough to prevent it, and leaving the impression that anything is possible. True, the western response solidified recently, albeit a bit late. However, notions of the need to appease Russia are gaining speed.
The confidence with which Russia is acting now comes partly from our inability to stand by our values and principles. Russia applied similar tactics in the case of Georgia in 2008. We searched for ways to get back to normal quickly, hoping that “normal” was also the intention of the Russian regime. It turned out it was not. So unwillingly, we became part of their plan. History repeats itself now.
The current conflict is not a simple divergence of views, but a major breach of rules by Russia – grabbing pieces of land and keeping them (not to be confused with peacekeeping), exercising aggression against a sovereign country (Ukraine) with full use of military, economic, energy and political means, including brutal info-warfare. Add to this the fuelling of separatism and terrorism, including the supply of weapons.
It is high time to put values ahead of a strategic partnership in our relations with Russia. Time to be more vocal rebuffing lies sold as “alternative truth” by the Russian leadership. Returning to normal is impossible without renewing pledges of basic rules and commitments – maybe renewing the Helsinki accords (the same as those that guided us out of the cold war, but including real enforcement mechanisms this time). It is also time to provide Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia with a clear European perspective – we need them stable and prosperous no less than they need us.
The Russian regime did not abandon its adversarial mentality towards the west – it is well testified in their security doctrine. We must stand firm, showing that we are neither following suit with aggression nor turning a blind eye to their deeds. By being steadfast in our values we can impel Russia to rethink its ambitions; by being mild we can encourage their cruellest actions.
